Grace Chapel Original Music

The Grace Chapel worship leaders have been working together to write original music inspired by what we have been learning together as a congregation. They all bring years of musical experience and a vast array of musical inspiration. Their songs are as unique and eclectic as the musicians that make up the band.

Meet the Band

Earl Raney

Musical Experience
I was always in love with music and on my 7th Birthday, my Grandfather gave me his trumpet.
About 15 years later I received a Bachelor's degree in trumpet performance from Boston University where I founded the EPIC BRASS QUINTET in 1983. Between 1987-2007 I toured with EBQ across forty-six states giving over 2500 performances at schools, churches, concert venues and festivals like Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Castle Hill and the Boston Esplanade. I received a Master's degree in Conducting from Boston University in 2009. Before joining Grace in 2019 as Orchestra Director and 2021 as Worship Leader, I served as Director of Music Ministries at a church in Easton, MA.

Sting & Lawrence Welk... very, very long story and many others (known and unknown greats!)

Musical Experience
Music has been an influence on me as far back as I can remember. I Picked up Guitar at age 7 and haven’t looked back since.  I started volunteering playing guitar in worship teams during high school. I played in a few rock bands and cover bands over the years. I graduated from Bridgewater State University with a degree in music performance and studied classical guitar during my time there. I spent a few years leading worship at various churches and played at worship conferences around New England with different teams of musicians.  I have opened events for various pastors and speakers including Author/Speaker Josh Mcdowell. I was part of a Songwriters group at Soundcheck Studios in Pembroke where I collaborated with other artists and worked on original songs.

Musical Influences
Bands/Artists: James Taylor, Sting, Eagles, Vertical Worship, Mercy Me, Housefires.
Guitarists: Andy Timmons, Brad Whitford, Joe Perry, Dean/Robert DeLeo, Andy Summers, Joe Walsh, Slash, Brett Garsed, Vicente Amigo, Paco De Lucia.

I started playing guitar when I was 15 after hearing a friend play acoustic guitar at Boy Scout camp. I thought it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard. Outside of Grace, I've mostly done solo guitar gigs at family weddings and funerals along with guitar videos on my YouTube channel.

Erin Martin

Musical Experience
I have loved singing since I was a very little girl. My whole family sings, so I was surrounded by it and learned from them. I sang solos at school and church, and during my high school years I was the lead singer in my church’s worship team.
I went to Berklee College of Music and graduated in 2000 with a degree in Professional Music. I was a worship leader at a church in Haverhill for 15 years before coming to GC.
My husband and I were members of an 80’s cover band called the Reaganomics. I've sung backup vocals for Alice Cooper, Paula Cole, Joan Osborne, Ace Frehley from KISS, Simon Kirk from Bad Company, Chad Smith from Red Hot Chili Peppers, & Trombone Shorty.
I started noodling on the piano at the age of 7 when my mom and I moved into a house that had a piano. I never took formal lessons, but I really wish I had. I started playing the acoustic guitar in high school to learn songs by the Indigo Girls and Jewel (oh yeah). I also never took formal lessons, but I really wish I had (notice a pattern here).  I started playing the bass when we needed a bass player at church.  I had always wanted to learn, so that was a good reason to start. I absolutely love to play bass.

Musical Influences
Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Wynona Judd, Indigo Girls, Patty Griffin, Dixie Chicks, Darlene Zschech, Israel Houghton, James Taylor, Prince (the outro of the song Purple Rain pretty much sums up my goal for all musical instrumental moments)

First Concert
Jon Secada (not sure many people will know who that is, but I was totally into his music & Gloria Estefan at the time).

3 Favorite Songs Right Now
1. "Firm Foundation (He Won’t)" by Austin Davis, Chandler Moore & Cody Carnes
2. "Show Love" by Harper Still,
3. "Your Ways (Isaiah 55)" by Shane & Shane

Primary Instrument
Singing is my favorite! Playing piano is my favorite for songwriting. Playing rhythm guitar is my favorite for digging into a song with a band. Playing bass guitar is my favorite when I don’t have to sing as much and I can just focus on locking into the groove!

Fun Fact
I love kickboxing, and I used to teach group fitness classes before the pandemic. I hope to get back to it someday!

Hobbies
Working out, vintage clothing shopping, drinking coffee (does that count as a hobby?)

Kathryn Baldanza

Kathryn serves as the Worship Leader for our East Lexington campus. Kathryn has been leading worship for over two decades and spends her time ministering to people wounded by painful church experiences.  Her passion is to see the broader church deal honestly with the vestiges of racism that continue to impact our communities and grieve the heart of God. When not at church, Kathryn writes music, reads avidly, drinks a lot of coffee, and keeps tabs on her five kids.  She believes in the faithfulness of the Lord amidst adversity, and that the best theological insights come from children. Kathryn joined the Grace Chapel staff team in 2018.
